How To Win Toto?

Short Answer: Place bet amount of $54, which will buy 54 chances, which could be:
  • 1 X Series 8
  • 3 X Series 7
  • 5 X Ordinary
With the news about the recent Toto draw that had 2 winners that won $6 mil each, it sparked my curiosity to think about the math and probability behind this national obsession.

"What would I do if I had $6 million...."

Of course, the best resource about Toto is from the Singapore Pools website itself, where they very kindly calculated the odds of winning Toto for people who are bad (or lazy) at math like us.

What kind of shady second-rate blog would I be if I didn't verify the numbers? Of course I'm too lazy to run the numbers, but this math blog did it. Looks legit to me.

So, of course the question is how many odds do 1 get for each ticket type. Luckily, it is actually very straight forward, $1 per chance, straight out of the horse's mouth. However, this website gives it in a nicer table.

So, as you can see, the odds of winning is 1/54. So all you have to do is fork out $54 and you'll get 54 chances, which gives you a probability of 1. In a purely statistical sense, someone with 54 chances would almost always walk away with a prize, at least with $10.

So there you go, if you like the feeling of winning, drop $54 into a Toto draw and walk away knowing that you have most certainly lost $44, but there is a chance you might win the Jackpot.

All the best!
